Muscle testing is a holistic, non-invasive diagnostic tool perfected by Michigan native George
Goodheart, D.C. (1918-2008). Dr. Goodheart became famous worldwide for unearthing Applied
Kinesiology, a technique that uses the testing of the muscles of the body as a diagnostic tool. To help
diagnose spinal problems, Goodheart intertwined Applied Kinesiology with chiropractic techniques to
help treat his patients. Muscle testing is a technique that is slowly creeping into the alternative healing
realm as an excellent way to diagnose what is good or not so good for one’s individual body.
Dr. Goodheart discovered that every muscle’s strength or weakness was related to three different
aspects of the body:
Balance of the chemical, mental, and structural segments of the body are considered the triad of health.
Dr. Goodheart did not use x-ray machines to diagnose vertebral subluxations but could touch the spine of a person lying on their stomach and use a leg-muscle test technique to analyze what vertebra was subluxated.
Dr. Goodheart taught that the body knows what is perceived to be suitable for it and what is not on a
deep, intuitive level. Many other researchers and scientists have taken Dr. Goodheart’s discovery and
applied it to diagnosing emotional, intellectual, allergenic, nutritional, and medical disorders.
The science behind muscle testing is that the body knows on an intuitive level what is and what isn’t
copacetic for it. Foods, colors, medicines, places, just about anything, register first with the muscles
after contact with the subconscious mind. The “immune system,” connected to the subconscious mind,
immediately decides whether a precaution needs to be taken for whatever appears in one’s
environment; whether what is in your space will enhance or diminish your world through the messaging of the muscles.
The subconscious mind, along with the auric body system, sends electrical and magnetic impulses
through the body’s muscles when something like food, medicine, someone else’s energy or color, for
example, is externally introduced to the body. In preparation to protect against or enjoy whatever has
entered your physical space, the muscles alert the subconscious mind, who then either message out to the body to enjoy or alert the immune system to protect.
If you are enhanced by an external stimulation (color, crystals, food etc.), your muscles respond by
strengthening, as if to say, “Yay, keep it coming.” If your subconscious mind, as the controller of the
autonomic nervous system, believes the color, person, food, drug, thought, etc., will be counter-
productive to your well-being, your muscles will respond by weakening to those outside forces.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) acts as a body control system that responds unconsciously
(automatically without conscious thought) to regulate coping body functions, such as heart rate,
respiration, sexual arousal, digestion, etc., to all mental, emotional, and physical stimulation. Regulation of the ANS relies on reflexes connected to the brain stem, the spinal cord and all twelve major organs.
In essence, Goodheart ultimately perfected Bluetooth messaging from the body’s brain, spinal cord, and organs to an outside test. Along with the auric body, the human body contains an electrical grid network that operates on an electromagnetic frequency that governs all of the muscles in the human body. When the human body is exposed to foods, drugs, crystals, even another being that would negatively impact or imbalance the grid network, the body’s muscles are temporarily inhibited or weakened as one’s energy wave frequency momentarily feels compromised. Thoughts, foods, emotions, colors, other beings, and environmental items all impact the muscles that are part of the human electrical grid.
Today, holistic healers/teachers use muscle testing, a non-invasive diagnostic technique, to find food
allergies, frequency (color)shortages or excesses, help select crystals, color therapy, and general life
questions. This writer recommends muscle testing for every diagnostic need. For example, is the color
you’re testing too much for the person? Too little? Will the blue crystal containing iron be good for the
patient you are testing? Will crystal therapy work for this patient? The body will never lie. In fact,
muscle testing can even be used to detect if you have just been lied to if the purported liar will agree to let you muscle test them.
For our purpose, muscle testing a patient or yourself when using crystals is imperative to discern a
patient’s positive or negative reaction to a stone’s structure, color, planetary influence, related
chakra(s), Earth element, and mineral (chemical) makeup. The tester tests the arm (or another body
part, e.g., legs, finger, etc.) for muscle strength or inhibition when the patient is exposed to specific
crystals usually holding it in the hand opposite the arm being used for testing. If a patient holding a
stone has muscle inhibition in their ability to resist the tester’s gentle pressure, it is a clear indicator that stone SHOULD NOT be used or prescribed for them as it tested as an inhibitor of one’s energy flow somewhere in the body. One of my crystal suppliers carries a plethora of stones in the many pockets of her daily uniform of cargo pants and pocket shirts. On a whim, I asked to muscle test her with a beautiful amethyst geode we both liked while her plethora of crystals remained in her many pockets.
She “blew out” (muscles inhibited) immediately. Then I had her remove all of her pocket stones and
retested her. The amethyst then strengthened her muscles. I concluded (after switching stones and
muscle testing multiple times) that the amethyst proved to be too much energy for her in conjunction
with the other stones she was carrying. Too much of anything is anti the “everything in moderation”
slogan, one of life’s golden rules.
Crystals should be treated like pharmaceutical drugs. A crystal’s potency and influence can be damaging as well as healing and should not be used carelessly. Muscle testing can help you diagnose and prescribe accordingly.
Intuition is never to be ignored, as intuition is the medium of Soul guidance. I was listening to a patient one day, and my brain said fuchsite, but my mouth said prehnite. I had just studied fuchsite’s healing potentials and was certain green fuchsite was what the patient needed. However, when I muscle tested her, it turned out that prehnite was the correct choice.
You can often hold a crystal, supplement, or food product in your hand and be muscle tested. There are circumstances, however, when holding a substance in one’s hand is not enough. I had a friend with a genetic condition that disallowed her body to process Folate (vitamin B9). She had ordered a new brand of a B12 supplement and ignored the small print on the label where it showed the addition of a small amount of B9.
After only two days of taking the new B12 supplement, she woke in the morning and had a huge golf ball-sized swelling under her right eye. The following day the swelling was under the other eye as well. She was muscle tested while holding the B12 pill in her hand. Her muscles did not “blow out.” I suggested she break open the capsule and, after rinsing her mouth with water, put the powder on her tongue, wait three seconds and muscle test. Her muscles violently inhibited. I can only surmise that the B9 was such a small dose compared to the B12 volume that it needed to actually connect with saliva to get a proper muscle test read. Do not put crystals in your mouth to muscle test.
Two-person, face-to-face muscle testing is one of several muscle testing methods. Before starting, the tester and the testee should be free of all metal (jewelry, glasses, belt buckles, etc.) Metal, one of the five Earth elements has been known to skew muscle testing results. With both you and the patient standing up, face each other no more than a foot apart, ask the patient to hold their dominant arm outward perpendicularly to their body, palm down (fig. MT1). Do not use body parts that are injured, damaged, or in any way not whole. The first step is to ascertain a baseline of the subject’s muscle responses. To do this, the tester places their index and middle fingers just above the patient’s wrist on the arm perpendicularly facing out. Ask the testee to resist you gently pushing down on their arm. This technique will give you a baseline of their strength and muscle resistance measure. Next, have the testee pick up a stone (or any substance you are testing for) that you think they may need or are attracted to and hold it in their palm opposite the perpendicular arm. Be sure the stone has been cleansed. If the patient’s arm is not strengthened to your gentle push, the stone is most likely not appropriate for them at this time. You must test for all stones you are prescribing collectively and individually. Some stones magnify the energy of other stones. Some stones draw out energy; some bring energy in. A bad crystal combination can do more harm than good. Again, for best results, the patient should not have any other crystals, jewelry, or metal on their bodies. Patients with metal rods or replacement parts will require special care when muscle testing as prosthetic metal in the body interferes with one’s electromagnetic fields. When testing with foods to determine possible allergies, put ½ tsp of the subject food on the subject’s tongue and muscle test using the above techniques.
Muscle testing can also find areas of energy weakness (possible auric body leaks) in the body. Muscle testing for auric leaks is best done with the patient laying down, face-up on your table and their arm upright, perpendicular and palm facing outward (fig. MT2). The tester can find auric body leaks by running their hand slowly over the body lying on the table about three inches above the body. When you feel a spot that is hot or cold, tug on the arm that is perpendicular to the body and silently ask, “Is the organ under the hot or cold spot (see body chart for this) functioning at full capacity?” If the muscle is strengthened, the answer is yes. If the muscle is inhibited, the response indicates the organ being tested may be weak, suggesting the need for energy balancing. Select a stone from the list you created from the patient’s intake form or one specific for the blocked organ’s function and muscle test for a positive result. The body never lies.
When a crystal inhibits a patient’s muscles, it may mean that they have an auric leak that needs mending before any specific crystal(s) should be applied.
Here are some causes of auric leaks:
Muscle test with the question, “Are there leaks in this auric field?”
When muscle testing to use a crystal, muscle weakness (indicating the body’s rejection of what you are testing for) may suggest that the chakra the stone best resonates with is not ready to be recharged or is energetically overcharged already. Stress, worry, physical illness, an ill-running body system, etc., can often shut down a chakra’s ability to process a crystal’s data/energy.
Before using any crystal, it is advised to diagnose what chakra(s) is blocked. Chakras work best when they are humming along equally like the pistons in a car’s engine. You can often diagnose a blocked chakra(s) by utilizing the “lay down muscle testing” technique and silently asking the subject a question, and being aware of the weakness or strengthening signals the muscles send with your hand placed over the chakra. You can also take the testee’s hand not being used for testing and place it on each chakra and muscle test, asking, for example, “Is Chakra 1 blocked?”
The specific area muscle testing method works best for stress, anxiety, color, allergies, and environmental issues. Stand face-to-face with your subject at arm’s length (fig. MT1). Have the testee close their eyes and extend their non-dominant arm out to the side so it’s parallel to the ground, palm down. Gently rest two or three fingers from your corresponding arm atop your patient’s extended arm. Using the forefinger from your other hand, touch the following test areas on your subject—asking yes and no questions as you go. The following locations (pressure points) to touch concerning the listed specific issues are the most sensitive and will respond best to your questions:
Often, no one is around to help you muscle test. Self-muscle testing can be used when testing for food compatibility and asking yes or no questions only. When muscle testing for crystals it is best to hold them in the palm of your hand. You can muscle test yourself in the following manner. Make two chain-like links with the index fingers and thumbs of your hands around each other (fig. MT3). Ask a “yes” or “no” question while gently pulling your linked fingers against each other— like you’re trying to break the link. An easily broken connection indicates a negative (inhibiting) response, and a strong (strengthening) connection represents a positive response.
The influences connected with a given crystal cannot be assumed to work for everyone in the same way. The emanation of a crystal may over-stimulate one patient’s organs or glands and equally ground or add imbalance to another patient’s same organ system. Muscle testing can guide you to assist the crystal user’s specific needs. Otherwise, crystal healing is just a guessing game.
Muscle test the colors you wear, the food you eat, the thoughts you have, even the color of the sunglass lenses you buy. Why surround yourself and put substances in your body that can antagonize your many working body parts?
